Hey Jimmy,
I had an interesting conversation with my 17 year old tonight. He’s a wise old soul!
We were talking about cancer treatments as a result of a new show he’s been watching where the main character had cancer. He was quite adamant that he’d NEVER want conventional treatment.
He’s convinced it’s not worth spending a million dollars to try things to keep him alive that would be pointless based on the track record he’s seen watching an aunt, uncle, two cousins, two family friends, and two of his own young friends suffer long, expensive hospital stays and then die.
He’s witnessed a lot of death in his young life, and he watches his mom day after day hard at work helping others to avoid similar fates.
It was a breath of fresh air having this conversation, and I am so proud of the young man he’s become.
A few short years ago when he was in the throes of early rebellious teenage-dom, had you told me life with my strong-willed oldest son would be so harmonious, I’d have never believed you.
SO I was thinking, while it may seem unbelievable to see yourself living your goals and dreams, in just a few short years, it CAN happen to you. But you need to take action NOW. It’s time to throw away the addiction to comfort foods and find true comfort.
Ask yourself this: are there any foods you’d be willing to give up your life for?
If the answer is no, it’s time to get out from under the covers and understand the dramatic impact your food choices have on your energy, your appearance, your mood, and your overall health.
Sometimes resistance is just a matter of people holding the false impression that eating healthy must be boring or difficult. But if you’d been there for my Eating for Hormone Balance class on Sunday (the video is now available!), you would see just how success it was and what a great a time we all had!
Choosing to change your attitude is the first step in choosing to change your lifestyle, and when you expose yourself to positive reinforcement from people who are having fun and feeling great doing what you want to do, you help make your own desired changes stick.
Speaking of desired changes, one of my choices resulted in a bit of a wake-up call for me this week. I share about it in my feature article.

A few weeks ago I gave a talk all about insulin resistance. It’s a health issue that impacts a lot of lives, and I felt the need to educate you about it and guide anyone who was interested through a program to heal it.
The program started on Monday with over 120 participants. One of the things I teach people how to do is test their own blood glucose throughout the day to learn once and for all how foods affect their bodies.
After giving them a really thorough understanding of insulin resistance and how it puts you at high risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke, they were determined to discover how their own bodies handle sugar.
It was a real eye opener.
Some used their discoveries as a motivator. They tested foods that they love but they know are not good for them, like bread, and when they saw how much it elevated their blood sugar they were shocked and swore off it forever.
For me it confirmed something I do that I sort of know is not good for me, but don’t REALLY believe is that bad for me. It has to do with sleep.
In the B4 Be Gone program, I teach 5 areas that need to be addressed to restore your mojo, boost your energy, and lead a long and prosperous life. One of the protocols is to get sufficient sleep.
It’s Best to Test
This week I discovered the silent damage that’s been happening inside me. There were no external symptoms, no signs.
When I got my glucose meter home, I immediately tore open the package and tested myself. First reading was 68.
Hmmmm… a little low, but not to worry.
I had barely eaten anything all day because I was teaching Eating for Hormone Balance, and expending a lot of energy.
So I decided I better eat something. The already peeled and cored pineapple looked good for a start, so I ate it. Imagine my surprise when I tested my blood sugar immediately afterward and found it to be 136.
The insert said it should never go above 140 for non-diabetics. My research told me it should never go above 110, and some studies on non-diabetic populations found that the average high point is 120.
So there you have it.
I eat well… very well.
I never touch sugar or grains, I eat a moderate amount of fruit in my smoothies, and even then, I rarely eat fruit alone. I exercise, and I do a pretty darn good job managing stress.
So why am I having trouble with blood sugar? (By the way, my sugars kept climbing, all the way to 167. That’s a number you’d expect in a diabetic.)
When You Slump Off on Slumber:
The only area I am falling short on is sleep. Can sleep really have such an adverse effect on me?
I went looking for research to find out. Countless studies talked about the effect of having less than 6 hours of sleep. One study said that even one bad night of sleep can throw off your insulin/blood sugar balance. I’ve been sleeping under 4 hours for the past several weeks.
So now that I get it, I am making a vow to start getting 7-9 hours of sleep every night, beginning this weekend. Maybe I’ll even do a sleep blog like I did a couple of years ago,
I am determined to really understand what’s going on in my body and correct it. I’ve poked myself over 50 times over the past 4 days.
My B4 Be Gone family is poking away and learning a lot about how their seemingly healthy diet was off for them. One woman found she can’t tolerate any fruit, even in smoothies, without a rapid rise of blood sugar. It’s very empowering.
Registration for this program is closed, except for a couple of VIP slots. We’ll be doing it again though, probably early next year, and I expect it will be a big sellout because people will have gained all their holiday weight.
What’s the Lifestyle Lesson?
Whenever anyone asks, “Is this good for for me to eat? I hear fruit/fat/whatever is not good for us…” my reply will be get yourself an inexpensive blood glucose monitor. I got mine at a local pharmacy chain for only $10. I saw the same one on Amazon for even less!

Know yourself, be honest with yourself, and make a commitment to drop the habits that aren’t serving you. Get excited about adopting new ones that will get you the comfortable, lean, and energetic “you” that you strive to be.

Green Slime Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 2 oranges, juice of
- 2 bananas, fresh or frozen and cut into chunks
- 2 cups frozen strawberries or blueberries
- 4-6 handfuls baby spinach
Directions:
- Blend juice and fruits. Continue to add spinach until the smoothie turns the desired color of green.
- Serve in Halloween-themed mugs or hollowed-out mini-pumpkins.
