I must say, it’s been quite a trip. I’ve only been away for a week, yet it feels like it’s been several. Quite a number of situations have put my stress transformation skills to the test. Let’s just say I’ve visited the beach quite a lot over the past 7 days, even though, unfortunately, I’ve never actually set foot in the ocean. My stress management technique of choice is HeartMath(R) and part of the process is to go in your mind to a place where you feel blissful… For me, it’s the beach. It’s because of this process that I have managed to sail through the stressors of this past week. As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I was heading to my father-in-law’s funeral last Monday. He passed away a week ago Sunday after a steady decline following a fall back in May. Although he was 89 and lead a full life, it’s hard to let go. He was one of the most gentle and kind people I have ever met. His warm smile and twinkling blue eyes touched many lives and he will be missed. In the Jewish tradition in which he was raised, the funeral arrangements are short and sweet. He died on Sunday and was buried on Tuesday after a beautiful service celebrating his life. My son Eric and I had originally been planning a college tour in California Tuesday afternoon, so we rescheduled for Wednesday and were all set to take an early flight Wednesday morning …until we got THE CALL from the Austin airport. They had my wallet! Apparently, I dropped it at the gate in my haste to claim our stand-by seats when they called our names. So we had the dilemma of how to get me on the flight the next morning without my ID. With gratitude and calm, we boarded the flight to L.A. where we were to meet our next challenge… the rent-a-car agents were not at all willing to give me a car without a “real license” or credit card. Again, a lot of deep breathing and a few phone calls later, we found a car rental service willing to rent to my 17-year old son! After calls to our insurance agent to verify Eric was insured and lots of paperwork, we got the car and headed to Whittier… with my 17-year old at the wheel, enjoying the wonders of L.A. traffic where it takes an hour and a half to go 25 miles! We were too late for the college tour and managed to once again reschedule to the next day. Finally at our destination, Eric dropped me off to check-in while he parked, only to find that they wouldn’t give the room to me with my copied license and my husband’s credit card. Eric had to use his debit card and show his license to get us a room. The next morning, my wallet arrived by Fed-Ex and we were relived to have everything back to normal …or so we thought. We had a great college tour and a fantastic dinner at a vegan restaurant called Real Food Daily in Santa Monica. When we arrived at San Jose airport later that evening we expected to get our car and drive the 10 minutes to our friend’s house where we were spending the night. The travel gods had other plans for us, however. My stress management skills once again were put to the test when the car we’d reserved through Priceline, and prepaid for, incidentally, was no longer available because we were a day late, in spite of the fact that my husband had called to let them know we would be a day late due to his dad’s funeral. After an hour on the phone with a very uncooperative agent, the best we could do was rent another car. An angel of an agent gave us an even better daily rate than Priceline had. By the time we finally made it to our destination, it was close to midnight. Fortunately, it was all downstream from there. Yes, we will have to hassle with Priceline to get a refund, but it’s a small thing in the scheme of life. Friday evening, Eric and I picked up Scott and Kevin at the airport and we spent the entire weekend having fun together. We visited cousins in San Francisco, attended a friend’s wedding on the beach in Half Moon Bay and spent a gorgeous, sunny Sunday in San Francisco with a dear friend. (Sunny, warm days in San Francisco and Half Moon Bay are rare this time of year and we had both, so we were truly blessed – our reward for making it through a trying week.) As trying as the week was, I am very pleased to report that my HeartMath practice paid off. I didn’t get stressed out, I managed to have fun in spite of it all, and I am soooo grateful for the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. Life gives us lots of opportunities. Getting stressed and upset doesn’t change anything about the circumstances but does create a train wreck inside your body. HeartMath has been my savior. The book Transforming Stress is a great place to start. Pour yourself a cup of chamomile tea, rub on a dab of lavendar oil, and read my feature article to learn one of the ways stress impacts you physically. Then try out my Belly Fat Be Gone Smoothie recipe for a true taste of stress-free delight. Remember to take a minute several times a day to breathe fully, connect to your heart, and deeply appreciate your blessings. By doing so, you’ll feel calmer, clearer, lighter, and more fully present to enjoy your relationships and your life. Much love and appreciation,

Belly Fat Breakthrough: – by Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo Have you noticed that excess belly fat appears to be almost epidemic these days, even amongst the very slender and the very young? I’m so tired of all the websites and programs that promise the answer to getting rid of those stubborn inches once and for all, while you still eat your favorite foods. They always flaunt someone with 6-pack abs to prove their point. The average person has tried at least 3 of these programs, only to find themselves back where they started, plus a few more inches in many cases, just a few months later. Why are most waist-targeted diets simply a waste? Most belly fat targeted programs fail to help you to change the habits that lead to your expanding waistline. Small and occasional “favorite food” indulgences could possibly be just fine and not sabotage your progress, but the truth is those foods are so addicting that small and occasional portions soon become small and regular portions, then larger portions regularly, and in many cases soon become all-out binges. When the “favorite foods” include bread, chips, crackers and muffins, it becomes very challenging for most people to keep the portions small. These foods not only are deficient in nutrients, they generally also cause a spike in insulin, a hormone that’s responsible for keeping your blood sugar at its optimal level. Too much insulin creates all sorts of problems, which we explain in detail in our Taming Your Midline Program. If you want a smaller waistline you need a bigger understanding of insulinIn summary, when you eat high carbohydrate comfort foods regularly, your insulin levels become dangerously high and your cells become resistant to insulin. This means you can’t get enough sugar into your cells and you feel tired, unfocused, and hungry after meals. To get control of your belly fat, you need to break the viscous cycle. How your muscles may be adding to your midlineOn top of the difficulty and stress people experience due to insulin resistance, worry and fear trigger increased cortisol, an adrenal hormone. Here’s the kicker that keeps the belly fat from burning… Cortisol mobilizes muscles to raise blood sugar quickly to prepare you to run or fight. When you’re sitting around worrying about something that may or may not occur, there is no way to burn all that extra blood sugar. So insulin comes to the rescue and stores it as fat. And cortisol’s favorite place to store the fat is around your belly. So how do you keep your thigh muscles from turning to belly fat?One way is to stop worrying. As a society, we do it all the time. Huge real estate in the local paper is devoted to gloom and doom predictions and stories of catastrophie. The goal is to induce fear. Fear sells. Listen in on the conversations that surround you. You’ll repeatedly hear people say, “I’m so worried about… .” When you worry over an event that has not happened and may not happen, the response in your body is identical to the reaction you’d have if the event was really happening. If the event does in fact transpire, you’ve paid twice! The wear and tear of worry on your body is huge, and constant worry over the years just may be a contributing factor to your expanding midline, especially if you’ve been exercising and eating well and don’t seem to be making progress. One of the strategies presented in my free e-course and e-book, 7 Simple Strategies to Jumpstart Your Energy Practically Overnight, is to take a news fast. Try it for a week. You just may find yourself being flatter around the middle, and as an extra bonus you’ ll be more focused and get a lot more done. This is just one of the strategies I will be sharing in my hot new free video series called Belly Fat, Brain Fog and Burnout Breakthroughs.
