We are besieged by news stories every day about the dangers of this-and-that toxin.
It’s hard — even for educated people — to tell truth from fiction, when it comes to questions about what elements of our diets and environments are truly “toxic” in the medical sense of the word.
- Sure, certain compounds – like arsenic or cyanide – are universally toxic to people, even in small doses.
- And nasty elements like trans fats (which the FDA recently moved to ban) should be frog-marched out of everyone’s diet.
- And exposure to some environmental toxins, such as phthalates, should be minimized because of their teratogenicity (i.e., they cause birth defects).
You are exposed to all manner of “unnatural” chemicals, types of pollution, and dietary elements. Which substances are really toxic? Which are toxic to you, specifically?
