Drastic Measures: Do We Really Need to Fear Our Genes?

???????????????By now most people have heard the shocking news about Angelina Jolie’s drastic decision to have a double mastectomy, and potential upcoming hysterectomy. Why did she decide to do such a radical thing? Did she have breast cancer? The answer is no. She discovered she had the BCRA gene, which indicates a higher risk of potentially getting breast cancer.

And yet, armed only with that information, remember, she did not HAVE breast cancer…she went under the knife anyway, as a preventative measure.

Recently I did a teleseminar for my Vital Health Community on the subject of Nutrigenomics, which is a fancy word for how food and nutrition can affect (both positively and negatively) our genetic predispositions.

What Angelina was not aware of, or her doctor did not make her aware of, was the fact that genetic testing can be used to show, yes, risks, but most, if not all of them can be mitigated beforehand, through diet and lifestyle changes, as well as nutritional support that could have kept her healthy for many years to come…and lengthen her life naturally.

I know it is entirely possible to overcome any genetic predispositions because I am living proof. I have already outlived my mother, who died at 56 on my 35th birthday. I share those same genetic risks. And yet, I have made different choices, and have spent the last two decades empowering others to do the same.

The important thing to remember here is that the information is not to be feared. You can use the data in your genetic profiling to empower yourself. Remember, as one of my favorite authors says:

“We are not the product of our genes.”
